May 7–August 29, 2010 Where is Home? an exhibition of photographs by Swedish-American photographer Tone Stockenström —will be on display at the American Swedish Institute from May 7 through August 29, 2010. The exhibit is a visual exploration of what “home” means to Stockenström, who was born in Sweden but immigrated to the United States at a young age. The project is the product of a journey back to Sweden to interview and photograph relatives, from Sweden’s capital city Stockholm to the northern city of Umeå. In this unique photo exhibit, Stockenström reveals the continually unfolding fascination of “the homeland,” a place from which one’s family may depart but never leave. She has called the U.S. home since the age of six, but a box of old family photos issued a siren’s call to return to Sweden. She sought out relatives in Uppsala, Sala, Stockholm and Umeå to photograph and interview. As many do, she visited graveyards to “hear” the stories of the departed as well. The resulting collection of images and notes presented in the exhibit combines the new and the old in a fugue that displays how a family dispersed nevertheless stays intact.
This definitely makes perfect sense to me!!!
